That was awesome! What an amazing time in Revy. Got to sled a bit, shred a bit, and our good friends showed us around town meeting cool peeps all over. It snowed most of the time over the few days, and made for some fun fresh turns. But it wasn't like the monster dumps that pounded Jackson and SoCo. Dang those zones must be all-time right now. So its back for a few days resting up for 1 more trip before the Olympics start up on Feb 12th. Shes gonna be a complete gong show for 2 weeks straight! No matter what condition the snow is, this will be a party to remember for decades! Can't wait!
And while surfing today, I come across this news report. Guess my gut told me right. The semis are deadly in the Rogers Pass. Heres the story as reported by Revelstoke Times Review newspaper.
"REVELSTOKE – A devastating collision at the top of the winding Albert Canyon hill located 25 kilometres east of Revelstoke has taken the life of two Calgary men. The collision happened in snowy conditions at approximately 2 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 3.
Revelstoke RCMP say the 29-year-old driver and 39-year-old passenger in an eastbound tractor-trailer died when their truck crossed the centre line on the Trans-Canada Highway and crashed into a westbound tractor-trailer.
RCMP say that the driver of the westbound truck escaped injury because the eastbound truck sideswiped his vehicle, avoiding the cab.
It then slammed into the trailer of the westbound truck, which was full of electronic equipment, causing the trailer to bend in half and wrap around the cab of the eastbound truck. The terrible impact mangled both the truck and the trailer, leaving a 200-metre field of debris strewn across the highway.
The driver and passenger died in the impact. The 39-year-old passenger was in the sleeper cabin portion of the truck at the time of the crash. RCMP say they have not yet determined why he was in the vehicle.
A third tractor-trailer unit was also involved in the incident when it crashed into some of the debris caused by the first impact. The driver of that truck escaped injury.
Revelstoke RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Rod Wiebe said that a comprehensive investigation is underway, and that the full spectrum of contributing factors are being explored. The highway was closed from the time of the incident until late Wednesday morning while investigators from the RCMP Southeast District Traffic Services poured over the scene.
While all possible contributing factors are being investigated at this point, Cpl. Wiebe did single out two factors during an interview with the Times Review. He noted that it was snowing at the time, and also said witnesses reported erratic driving on the part of the deceased driver. "The roads were less than ideal," said Wiebe. "However, we still have to deal with the allegations that the truck had been driving erratically prior to this incident."
Wiebe said the reports of erratic driving came from interviews with witnesses following the accident, and that it had not been reported to the RCMP prior to the collision. "It's looking like this is more likely driver error than it would be condition of the road," Wiebe said later in the interview.
He said that the full report could take some time. "It could be a couple months before we have an answer from [investigators about] what happened."
The trucks were removed from the scene for subsequent forensic mechanical inspections.
Revelstoke RCMP have contacted the Calgary Police Service who are assisting with notification of next of kin. Names are not being released at this point."
