NorthBC Marathon Trip / Greatest Games on Earth

This past week I had to go scope out a project for work up north. Theres some serious issues up at this one site we operate. So it was a midweek trip to Buckinghorse River to scope it out and make a game plan. While leaving site I was greeted by this sick view of the Northern Rockies.

We had to fly through Van during the marathon round trip, and got to a clear sight of Cypress MTN on Feb 10th. Looked somewhat patchy up there. Now the weather network is sayin its puking rain. Crazy Canadian Weather eh!
With the truck fixed up we are leaving for Van tomorrow morning! STOKED! My top picks to win gold for our nation are:
Justin Lamoureux
Drew Neilson
Maelle Ricker
Jasey-Jay Anderson
Ariane Lavigne
Wish the best of luck to all our athletes in the coming games and we will all be cheering you on!

Revystoked to Revysketchy

That was awesome! What an amazing time in Revy. Got to sled a bit, shred a bit, and our good friends showed us around town meeting cool peeps all over. It snowed most of the time over the few days, and made for some fun fresh turns. But it wasn't like the monster dumps that pounded Jackson and SoCo. Dang those zones must be all-time right now. Heres a few pics from the short trip.

So its back for a few days resting up for 1 more trip before the Olympics start up on Feb 12th. Shes gonna be a complete gong show for 2 weeks straight! No matter what condition the snow is, this will be a party to remember for decades! Can't wait!

And while surfing today, I come across this news report. Guess my gut told me right. The semis are deadly in the Rogers Pass. Heres the story as reported by Revelstoke Times Review newspaper.
"REVELSTOKE – A devastating collision at the top of the winding Albert Canyon hill located 25 kilometres east of Revelstoke has taken the life of two Calgary men. The collision happened in snowy conditions at approximately 2 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 3.

Revelstoke RCMP say the 29-year-old driver and 39-year-old passenger in an eastbound tractor-trailer died when their truck crossed the centre line on the Trans-Canada Highway and crashed into a westbound tractor-trailer.

RCMP say that the driver of the westbound truck escaped injury because the eastbound truck sideswiped his vehicle, avoiding the cab.

It then slammed into the trailer of the westbound truck, which was full of electronic equipment, causing the trailer to bend in half and wrap around the cab of the eastbound truck. The terrible impact mangled both the truck and the trailer, leaving a 200-metre field of debris strewn across the highway.

The driver and passenger died in the impact. The 39-year-old passenger was in the sleeper cabin portion of the truck at the time of the crash. RCMP say they have not yet determined why he was in the vehicle.

A third tractor-trailer unit was also involved in the incident when it crashed into some of the debris caused by the first impact. The driver of that truck escaped injury.

Revelstoke RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Rod Wiebe said that a comprehensive investigation is underway, and that the full spectrum of contributing factors are being explored. The highway was closed from the time of the incident until late Wednesday morning while investigators from the RCMP Southeast District Traffic Services poured over the scene.

While all possible contributing factors are being investigated at this point, Cpl. Wiebe did single out two factors during an interview with the Times Review. He noted that it was snowing at the time, and also said witnesses reported erratic driving on the part of the deceased driver. "The roads were less than ideal," said Wiebe. "However, we still have to deal with the allegations that the truck had been driving erratically prior to this incident."

Wiebe said the reports of erratic driving came from interviews with witnesses following the accident, and that it had not been reported to the RCMP prior to the collision. "It's looking like this is more likely driver error than it would be condition of the road," Wiebe said later in the interview.

He said that the full report could take some time. "It could be a couple months before we have an answer from [investigators about] what happened."

The trucks were removed from the scene for subsequent forensic mechanical inspections.

Revelstoke RCMP have contacted the Calgary Police Service who are assisting with notification of next of kin. Names are not being released at this point."

Cool

Heres a couple more photos from the trip up north.

Such an awesome place!

Weekend looks good, so its back to Revy for 3 days of straight snowingboarding!

BIG Update - PK Twenty 10 and Revy/Golden Combo

So its been over a month since my last update. But good news, this post will make up for the extended dry spell! So go grab a coldie from the fridge or snow bank outside, and get comfy.
First things first. The trip up north. After driving 3000 kms, narrowly missing 12 moose on the HWY, and driving by brail for hours, we are back home safe.

3000 kms round trip

We racked up 6 days of lift access and 3 days sled access during the trip. Reaching new terrain that has been non lift accessible since I started riding PK 17 yrs ago! There was a dry spell during the trip, but an incredible temperature inversion made up for that, and I bagged a virgin tree-run above the lake of clouds filling the rocky mountain trench.

It felt so heart warming to be riding with my childhood best friend and the love of my life in a place where I have such a strong connection. Special thanks to Michele & Aron, and the rest of the crew for making this trip what it was. WHITE POWDER!!!

This year has been magic. I have gained a deeper connection with the trees I constantly interact with. We are just energetic guests in their still, silent domain. Finding lines between them as they creak and groan from stiff old age, jibbing their saplings and deadfall with speed. Passing by generations of growth as they watch over us gliding through them with style and grace, buttering the same fresh white gold that cakes their limbs and weighs them down. They stand firm, rooted, solid in stature. If only they could talk to tell us the stories of all the travellers they have seen over the years. We are only visitors, but they give us comfort and shelter out of the storm and make us feel at home for just mere moments in their lifespan.

Every night, especially New Years Twenty 10 went down with all sorts of crazy-balls stuff. In summary, we burnt the candle at both ends and it’s a good thing we were outside the reaches of the modern day law, cause it was straight wild up there.

Instant Fun

After watching the weather closely with anticipation, it was off to Revy & Golden to see what the famous Pineapple Express has given up this year. This will be the second year in a row that I have been able to hit a Revy/Golden combo during the Pineapple Express! Checkout this Grade-A footage from Sledshot.com's collabo w/ BMCProductions of last years fun. http://www.youtube.com/user/sledshot#p/u/27/efHl_UQVwEI

Driving through the Rogers Pass @ 2am alone was sketchy to say the least. But when I got to Revy, I was greeted with a break in the storm, and good friends to share a few tree-runs with. The reports only said 7 cms, but we found the goods with balls deep BCPOW and lots of large platforms in series to launch off. Its always good laughs, soft landings, and smiles in Revy.

RMR Bulletin

Then driving back through the Roger Pass, I was challenged with some pretty hairy conditions. What they forgot to mention on the warning board was windshield wipers full blast and 100+ oncoming semi trucks that don’t care about the center line! Sometimes I wonder who is behind the wheel of the semi truck, and just hope one day I don’t become a statistic of the Trans-Canada HWY. Jarret Banks, RIP. We miss you Bro
First Warning

Second Warning

I made it safely back to Golden, and just in time for the Pineapple Express to really let loose. The boards reported 34cms in 24 hrs, but it was way deeper than that in the wind-loaded zones & chutes we where thrashing. With a strong crew of 3 skiers and 2 boarders, we made the most of the puking skies. Then the next morning, the storm left just as quick as it rolled in, revealing sun & dark blue skies with a thick blanket of fresh, deeeep, BCPOW. Walking to the gondy, artillery echoed through-out the Columbia Valley. Heres an edit of the morning laps.

KHMR & Slackcountry

Faceshots galore

That weekend we had super super fun-times up at 2 cabins @ KHMR’s Purcell Woods. With 6 kegs being emptied over 3 nights, official beer-pong table & flip cup claiming the bragging rights, and a shot-ski that everyone had a few laps on. And on the final night our Olympic Theme party went down as all-time! From the Jamaican bobsled team, the injured freestyle ski team, head-to-toe 1988 Calgary Olympic official attire, to the official torch bearer. Sorry I don't have any Olympic pics...camera crapped out from the beer spillage! I managed to fall down the stairs towards the end of the night hurting myself enough to sluff off the next day of sled access to tend to my wounds. Still recoupin here till the next storm rolls through.

This season is getting close to being half done, and I have 20 amazingly great days in the bag, and are on-track for another 50+ day season for the 4th year in a row! So happy! But how cool would it be to shred full-time and still pay the bills?!? That would be all-time.

If you got tickets to all the 2010 Olympics Snowboarding events, good chances I’ll be seeing you there. Just hope that some fresh BCPOW dumps on Cypress before things go down. But as it stands now, it looks like we will be having a brown, fake Olympics. Not the white gold that would make this Olympics truly Canadian. But hard dates and weather usually never work out, so not really that surprised. Are you?

Till the next round, peace out YO.

NorthBC Trip

Dead Man Talking

I was on the snowest forums reading up on the latest from Revy, and came across a post from an avy survivor of his story about a tragic experience he just lived through. The event happened on Revy's Frisby Ridge on Nov 17th, 2009. It is pretty traumatic to read, but very informative at the same time as it gives a person a sense of what is needed in order to save lives when the worst case scenario happens with your crew. Heres the first hand story of an experience of a man who calls himself Ratchet that died and then was revived on-scene by his crew.

"ET All; Avy beware!!!
I am not a man who expresses himself well in person, so I want to thank, from the bottom of my heart the two individuals who kept there wits about them (you know who you are Jeff and Randy, and my family is indebted to you) and were able to over come all ODDS to dig me and Riley out of our snow caskets. We were in frisby at the back in deadmans creek (maybe not the best decision!). Anyway we dropped in at 300pm bc thinking this may not be the best decision, got almost to the bottom and realized there was no safe way out the bottom. person x went a bit further and lost his nuts, decided it was best to dig in and try to come out the top. I removed my pack and helmet and proceeded hike down to help turn his sled around. We turned his sled around and as he regained his breath I began to hike back up. he hit the throttle and begin his minny adventure back up. Randy made it 50 yards and the slope broke, we all thought,"wow get the cameras this is going to be funny", then the slope fractured above him!!! I had literally 2 seconds to break into stride to head for the trees when a wave of snow hit me and covered me. the same wave knocked Riley off my sled had who was trying to see where randy was headed. The wave knocked riley off my sled and into a tree where my sled pinned his legs against it, he had no idea what hit him. that same wave carried jeff and his sled 50 yard down the hill. jeff scrambled to pull his avy bag cord 3 times but did not deploy. at that point jeff mad a decision to start scrambling for a tree as he was headed for a cliff. at this point I was barried with only my hand sticking out and I was frantically trying to clear snow away from my face, then a third slide came and burried me 3 feet under and it was like being concreted into the ground, I could not even blink the snow was packed so tight around me. from what I was told jeff was only haging on by a tree from being washed over the cliff after the third slide came. Randy who was on the sled some how miraculisly was able to avoid all 3 slides after being tossed and turned on his sled and managed to ride it out ( act of god, or something, call it what you want). all the avy's settled and riley was buring 5 feet under pinned by the sled and I was compacted like a garbage truck 3 feet under. Randy said he began immediate panic mode and began yelling for anyone left uncovered, as he could not see anyone or know where any one ended up. Jeff yelled out from 150 yards below, " I am here". randy ran all the way down to jeff to check his status, then they turned on there beacons and got a signal 50 yard up and 50 yards down (which would have been over the cliff) they scrambled up and down the slope to determine where the upper signal was coming from and were able to find Riley's signal after roughly 5-10 minutes, took 5 minutes to uncover rileys face and then a few more minutes to shut his beacon off. Riley was in severe pain as his knees and legs were pinned between a tree and my sled (which has landed him in Vernon emergency for surgery as a result). After getting riley air and his beacon shut off randy and jeff began ther search for number 2, me, just so happens they were standing on me the whole time they were digging out riley, but because we were so close the most recent ortovox avy beacons could not differentiate the two. Randy noticed a black spot through the snow (my belaclava) and frantically began digging. He uncovered my face and found a blue and purple corpse (literally), he said I was not breathing nor responsive. he continued to uncover my chest and abdomin, yelling "breath XXXXX, breath XXXXX!) I apparantly blinked very slowly and gasped a tiny breath of air. I do not rember much untill about 30 miniutes after I was pulled out of the hole. They continued to work on riley as he was pinned down. after all was said and done we ended up hiking/quadrupling off the hill with the remaining sled. worst scenario ever!!!!

ps.being barried alive is the worst thing on the planet, your lungs affixiate and the pain is unbearable, then you begin haluciating and thinking you can just take a nap and it will all be OK! when you get to that stage think of anything you can to keep you consious, kids, wife, girfriend, sled, job, whatever it takes to hang on for an extra 30 seconds, because I assure you it will count. I am sure this blurb does not do the justis to the trials and tribulations my barried partner went through, nor our other two friends (who happened to save our lives) went through.

PSS, avy is out there, ride with caution!!! "

Baseless Early Season STOKE

Put in a call to Mountain Toys, and they just finished up replacing the last broken part on my sled, and its ready for pick-up! YEE-OW! So we should be ready to get after it by mid November. Early season is my favorite time cause not much base has set up and we end up riding baseless snorkel snow for days on end. What a great feeling!

"Any day were you don't see down past your knees all day is a good day of riding the deep"

Soon...

So I was looking through last years pics, and came across these ones taken from Revy of a zone I eye'd up with lots of potential. The good thing about this zone, is that is goes from mellow laps, to trick/air mid-line combos all in the same sled lap. How many lines can you see?

Made it to the Alterna Elektro Premiere on Saturday night, and gotta say.............them wildcats is still on fira YO! The vibe from that movie got me itchin to go jumping. Congrats on another killer movie Alterna!

Good Morning

Welcome. Hope you like what you see here. As the winter season carries on I will hopefully be adding content to give you a taste of what I'm up too this year. Here is one of my favorite shots from a few seasons ago that seemed to turn out okay. Enjoy!
